Telegram has strengthened its partnership with The Open Network (TON), now exclusively integrating TON as the sole blockchain for its Mini App ecosystem and making Toncoin the sole token for in-app transactions.
The partnership between Ton and Telegram marks a significant milestone but also a risky bet for the two.
Telegram: A Super App with Mini Apps
Telegram has adopted a strategy to transform into a super app, much like WeChat, by integrating mini apps as a core tool in achieving this vision. These mini apps, which function seamlessly within Telegram, provide users with a wide range of services, from payments to entertainment.
Even now, this feature positions Telegram as more than just a messaging platform, allowing developers to experiment with its rich toolset. Coupled with popularity among the crypto community, Telegram became the Web2 platform of choice for Web3 users.
TON: Telegram The Open Network
Ton, a decentralized blockchain network based on technology developed by Pavel Durov's brother Nikolay Durov, has a unique history closely tied to Telegram.
Initially, TON was positioned as a Telegram-integrated blockchain platform, but following a legal case with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Telegram distanced itself from the project.
The blockchain was officially passed to an independent community of developers. Despite this separation, TON remained integral to Telegram’s Web3 initiatives and Mini App market development in particular.
TON has significantly benefited from its association with the world's largest messenger. Mini Apps, of which there are thousands, have provided an inflow of users, increased the number of transactions and the volume of on-chain digital assets.
All or Nothing. Telegram Bets On TON
Now, when Telegram exclusively allows TON blockchain integrations for its Mini Apps, the TON blockchain user base and activity can grow much more rapidly.
While details about the full scope of the partnership are still emerging, the terms and conditions on Telegram's developer portal have already been updated.
Officially, this move aims to streamline user experience and enhance app functionality across Telegram's services. From the Telegram strategic viewpoint, however, this is a strong bet on the sister blockchain and Web3 tech in general. The announcement on the TON blog says, “The new exclusivity agreement deepens the technological ties between TON and Telegram."
However, this move is not without risks. By restricting blockchain integrations to TON, Telegram may alienate users who favor other blockchain networks. Currently, Telegram is the largest platform for in-messenger applications and the only one that has blockchain integration. However, this decision may trigger other platforms to develop similar Mini App ecosystems that allow for multiple blockchain integrations.
The TON-only approach has already stirred concerns within the Web3 community. Critics argue that limiting the platform to a single blockchain could hinder broader technological diversity and innovation.
Additionally, questions about TON's liquidity and technical maturity suggest potential challenges in supporting a diverse range of blockchain activities, which could affect overall ecosystem growth.
