The meme-coin craze is about to hit Bitcoin. Can stupidity and greed bring additional utility to the number one blockchain?

Runes were introduced in 2024 as a method for adding NFTs and meme tokens on top of the Bitcoin blockchain. By June 2024, Runes had surpassed similar protocols Ordinals and BRC-20 in terms of transaction share on the Bitcoin network.
As of the time of writing, the combined market capitalization of the Rune-based tokens stands at around $700 million, down from its all-time high of $2 billion in 2024.
Despite its association with the blockchain with the largest liquidity, Runes protocol is slow to gain adoption due to its inherent platform limitations. Bitcoin blockchain was developed to serve a decentralized payment system. Other networks handle NFTs and funny memes much more easier.
Odin.fun is a new Runes marketplace and launchpad inspired by the success of Solana’s Pump.fun, which has seen huge growth, exceeding $400 million earlier this year.
The new token incubator is developed by the team behind Bitcoin ordinals marketplace Bioniq, Odin.fun works seamlessly with the Bitcoin Runes protocol, enabling users to buy, sell, create, and swap Runes with 20-second transaction finality.
Co-founder Bob Bodily describes Odin.fun as an "appchain" or L2 solution, offering seamless Bitcoin functionalities without traditional Layer 2 complexities. In a post on X he said, "Odin Fun is blazingly fast. The speed of Solana w/ the experience of Bitcoin. Everything takes 2 seconds. Buy, sell, create, swap, add/remove liquidity. 2-second finality. Tokens deserve to be traded at the speed of light, and Odin Fun directly enables this."
Odin.fun aims to democratize access to Bitcoin Runes and hopes to potentially spark a meme coin frenzy akin to Pump.fun’s success on Solana.
Odin.fun derives its name from Odin, a central deity in Norse mythology. Odin is often associated with wisdom, knowledge, and the discovery of runes—the ancient alphabetic script used by Germanic peoples. According to legends, Odin sacrificed himself by hanging from the World Tree, Yggdrasil, for nine days and nights to gain the knowledge of runes, which were believed to possess magical properties and were used for divination and communication.
Now it is time for degens to sacrifice their crypto savings to reveal the magical properties of the Bitcoin based token protocol. Not a financial advise!
