28 different meme-coins, including Doge, JShiba and Pluto, were sold by Vitalik Buterin this week. All proceeds from the almost 984,000 USDC sale were donated to his charity, Kanro. The sell-off impacted the price of the coins, including Dogecoin’s sister coin, Neiro, which plunged 3% after the sale. Buterin has a history of charitable donations, including a sell-off of Shiba Inu worth billions of dollars for COVID relief in India and, more recently, the adoption of a baby hippo named Moo Deng. Some crypto bloggers have suggested that the meme-coin sell-off shows his diminishing interest in “speculative tokens” and wonder if he is distancing himself from projects without utility or any real long-term vision like Ethereum. Still, it does put these meme-coins to some use. As one user on X put it, “Who knew internet jokes could one day fuel philanthropy.”
